In a significant move toward rebuilding Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has issued a decree to form an expert committee tasked with drafting a constitutional declaration to guide the country through its transitional phase.
The newly-formed committee includes constitutional law experts such as Abdul Hamid al-Awak, Yasser al-Huwaish, Ismail al-Khalfan, Mohammad Reda Jalkhi, and Bahia Mardini, the only woman on the committee, who is a journalist with a background in law.
These experts will be responsible for developing a constitutional declaration that will set the legal framework for Syria’s transition.
The decision to create the committee follows the outcomes of the Syrian National Dialogue Conference, which convened last week.
The goal of the dialogue was to chart a roadmap for Syria’s future after the fall of Assad’s regime.
The final statement from the conference emphasized the importance of a temporary constitutional declaration to resolve the current constitutional vacuum and establish a stable legal framework.
The move comes after Assad fled to Russia in December, ending the Baath Party’s decades-long rule.
In January, President Ahmed al-Sharaa was appointed to lead the country during the transitional period, overseeing significant changes, including the dissolution of armed factions and the previous regime’s institutions.
The committee’s work is expected to be pivotal in ensuring a peaceful transition, laying the foundation for a permanent constitution that promotes justice, equality, and the rule of law.
