TÜRKIYE’S POVERTY RATE SEES SLIGHT DECLINE, AFFECTING 13.3% OF POPULATION

According to the latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), 13.3% of Türkiye’s population lived in severe material and social deprivation in 2024.

This represents a decline of 1.1 percentage points from the previous year’s rate of 14.4%.

The data highlights the ongoing challenges faced by a significant portion of the Turkish population, with many struggling to meet basic needs such as owning a car, affording a week-long vacation, or paying rent and debts.

Additionally, factors such as limited access to internet, inability to replace worn-out clothing, and lack of participation in paid leisure activities contribute to the overall poverty rate.

The provinces with the highest poverty rates were found to be Kırıkkale and Aksaray, while Gaziantep and Adıyaman registered the lowest rates.

The data also reveals that 4.3% of the population has remained in poverty over the past four years, while 74.8% have never experienced poverty.

Furthermore, the report highlights issues related to housing, with 56.1% of the population residing in self-owned homes, and 56.8% reporting installment payments or debt obligations.

Structural issues such as leaking roofs and damp walls affect 31.3% of the population.
