Turkiye has reactivated its consulate in Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, after a 13-year hiatus, offering services such as visa and passport processing.
The consulate’s operations were suspended in July 2012 due to the civil war in Syria.
However, following the end of Bashar al-Assad’s government and significant political changes in Syria on December 8, 2024, Turkiye decided to restore its diplomatic relations.
On December 12, Burhan Koraoglu was appointed as Turkiye’s Chargé d’Affaires in Damascus, and the Turkish Embassy in Damascus was reopened on December 14.
The reopening of the consulate is being hailed as a significant step toward strengthening relations between the two countries and fostering regional stability.
This move by Turkiye aims to facilitate trade and public interaction while also providing convenience to Turkish citizens residing in Syria.
