Turkish Firms Join $7B Energy Deal to Rebuild Syria’s Power Grid

In a significant move to restore Syria’s war-torn energy sector, a consortium including Turkish companies signed a $7 billion agreement with the Syrian government to develop major power projects. The deal, signed in Damascus on May 30, includes constructing four gas power plants and one large solar facility.

Led by Qatar’s UCC Holding, the consortium features Türkiye’s Kalyon GES Enerji Yatırımları and Cengiz Enerji, as well as U.S based Power International. The combined output of these projects is expected to reach 5,000 megawatts, potentially meeting over half of Syria’s electricity needs.

Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir called it a “turning point” in the country’s recovery, with President Ahmed al-Sharaa and U.S envoy Thomas Barrack in attendance at the ceremony. The initiative follows the lifting of U.S sanctions and is part of broader efforts to attract private investment after over a decade of conflict devastated Syria’s infrastructure.

The projects will be financed by international banks and private capital, and are projected to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs. Türkiye has also pledged to supply Syria with natural gas, further strengthening its role in the country’s reconstruction.
