An extraordinary meeting of Arab countries was held in Cairo, attended by representatives from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, and other Arab nations, as well as the UN Secretary-General, the President of the European Union, and the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The meeting focused on Gaza’s reconstruction and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The primary objective was to form a unified Arab stance against US President Donald Trump’s plan to take control of Gaza and displace Palestinians.
During the meeting, Egypt rejected Trump’s proposal and announced a plan for Gaza’s reconstruction that respects Palestinian rights and ensures they remain on their land.
Egypt’s plan for Gaza includes a proposed 5-year $53 billion project that would involve building millions of homes, a commercial port, and an airport, while also addressing elections in Palestinian territories and efforts toward a two-state solution.
At the end of the meeting, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit declared that Egypt’s plan had now become an Arab plan. The Arab position is clear: any form of displacement, whether voluntary or forced, is unacceptable.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced that Egypt, in collaboration with Palestinians, had formed an administrative committee made up of independent Palestinian experts.
This committee will oversee Gaza’s affairs and monitor humanitarian aid until the Palestinian Authority reasserts control.
