Syria Welcomes OIC’s Decision to Restore Membership After 13 Years

Syria has officially welcomed the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) decision to restore its membership after being suspended for 13 years.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry expressed that this decision is a crucial step towards Syria’s reintegration into the international community as a “free and just state.”

The statement emphasized Syria’s commitment to OIC principles, including cooperation, justice, and dignity, and expressed Syria’s readiness to collaborate with Islamic nations to rebuild the country and strengthen the region.

The Syrian government reiterated its aspirations to create a future where the Syrian people regain their rightful place among nations and contribute to a stronger and more unified Islamic world.

This comes after the fall of the Bashar Assad regime, which led to the suspension of Syria’s OIC membership in 2012, due to the violent crackdown on protests.

Diplomatic sources confirmed that Turkiye’s initiative during the OIC Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Jeddah played a pivotal role in facilitating Syria’s return to the OIC.

Syria’s membership was suspended in 2012 following the escalation of violence against its own people.

After the regime’s collapse in December 2024, Syria’s transitional leadership, under President Ahmed al-Sharaa is now looking forward to working closely with its regional partners.
