In a significant development, senior journalist Matiullah Jan was released from Adiala Jail on Saturday after an Islamabad anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted him bail in a terrorism and narcotics case.
Jan’s arrest on Thursday had sparked widespread concern among rights bodies and the journalism fraternity, with many demanding his release. The case against him was widely criticized as being “bogus” and based on “trumped up charges”.
The Islamabad ATC granted Jan bail on surety bonds worth Rs10,000, marking a significant victory for the journalist and his supporters. Jan’s lawyer, Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir, confirmed his release, expressing relief and gratitude.
The development comes as a welcome respite for Jan, who had been detained for nearly three days. His release is seen as a testament to the power of public pressure and the unwavering support of the journalism community.
