Following the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement yesterday, Israel has released at least 90 Palestinian prisoners today, while Hamas freed three Israeli hostages.
This morning, two buses carrying the freed Palestinian prisoners arrived in Beitunia, a town in the West Bank, where emotional scenes unfolded as families embraced their loved ones, waved Palestinian flags, and shouted slogans of hope and solidarity.
Among those released was Palestinian journalist Bushra al-Taweel, who had been detained by Israeli authorities since March 2024.
Speaking after her release, Bushra expressed gratitude, saying, “The wait was difficult, but we had faith that our freedom was near.” Her father, still imprisoned in Israel, remains hopeful that he will also be released under the terms of this agreement.
Over the next 42 days, around 1,900 Palestinian prisoners are expected to be freed in exchange for 33 Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Among the freed prisoners are individuals detained without charges under administrative detention and some convicted of crimes, including killings.
Hundreds of Palestinians gathered in Beitunia to celebrate the releases, waving Palestinian and Hamas flags, chanting slogans, and setting off fireworks.
Amanda Abu Sharah, 23, shared her feelings, saying, “These prisoners are like family, even if not by blood.”
Mohammed, a recent releasee, added, “So many innocent people, including children and women, are in custody. The joy of their release is indescribable.”
An 18-year-old girl eagerly awaited the release of her mother, who had been detained in January 2024 on charges of alleged incitement on social media. “I will hug my mother first and talk about all the time we spent apart. There will certainly be tears,” she said.
Both Israel and Hamas have expressed their commitment to honoring the agreement, which many Palestinians see as a significant achievement. They hope this ceasefire will mark the beginning of a lasting peace.
