Google has officially updated its maps for users in the United States to reflect a name change for the Gulf of Mexico.
As part of an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump, the Gulf will now be referred to as the “Gulf of America” in Google Maps within the US.
The name change aligns with the US Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System.
While people in Mexico will continue to see the traditional name, users in other countries will see both names, with “Gulf of America” listed in parentheses next to the original title.
This decision comes after Trump’s move to alter long-established geographic names, such as the renaming of Mount Denali in Alaska back to Mount McKinley.
Interestingly, Apple Maps has opted not to follow Google’s lead, continuing to use “Gulf of Mexico” without change.
