In Germany’s early parliamentary elections, the conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has emerged victorious.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz secured 28.5% of the vote, while the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 20.8%, making it the second-largest party in the German parliament.
Former Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party, the SPD, received 16.4% of the vote, with Scholz accepting the defeat. Additionally, the Green Party secured 11.6% of the vote, finishing in fourth place.
With this result, CDU leader Friedrich Merz is on track to become the new German Chancellor.
