Elderly Population in Türkiye Exceeds That of Nations Like Switzerland and New Zealand

According to official data, Türkiye’s elderly population has grown to 9.1 million, representing 10.6% of the nation’s total population.

This figure surpasses the elderly populations of 96 countries, including well-known nations such as Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Armenia.

In 2023, Türkiye’s total population stood at 85.6 million, with seniors making up a notable portion. Globally, seniors accounted for 10.2% of the world’s population of 8.1 billion people last year.

When comparing countries, China leads with the largest elderly population at 208.1 million, followed by India with 103.7 million and the United States at 61.9 million.

Among the nations with the highest elderly population percentages, Monaco stands out at 36.2%, followed by Japan at 29.8%, Italy at 24.6%, Portugal at 24.5%, and Greece at 23.9%.

On the other hand, Qatar has the smallest proportion of elderly citizens at just 1.7%, followed by the UAE at 1.8%, Zambia at 1.9%, Chad and Sudan at 2.1%, and the Central African Republic at 2.2%.
