US Interests Stressed as White House Acknowledges Ongoing Talks with Hamas

The White House confirmed that the Trump administration has been in direct talks with Hamas, asserting that these discussions are aligned with US interests.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that Israel had been consulted on the matter and the talks are “ongoing,” though she refrained from detailing the exact nature or scope of the discussions.

Leavitt emphasized that President Trump’s commitment to engaging in dialogue globally reflects his goal to serve the best interests of the American people.

US presidential envoy for hostage affairs Adam Boehler is reportedly leading the US delegation in the talks, which have been taking place in Qatar in recent weeks.

These negotiations come after a temporary ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that briefly halted violence in Gaza in January.

However, this ceasefire has since collapsed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted advancing to the second phase of the deal, while Hamas insists that negotiations for a full Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war are essential.

The situation is further complicated by ongoing international legal issues for Israel, including arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza.

Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the Gaza conflict.
