UN Backs Türkiye’s Diplomatic Push Ahead of May 15 Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks in Istanbul

The United Nations has voiced strong support for Türkiye’s diplomatic efforts to facilitate peace in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, just days ahead of the anticipated May 15 talks in Istanbul.

Speaking at a news conference on May 13, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric praised Ankara’s continued commitment to mediation, stating, “We always appreciate the role that Türkiye has played in trying to bring an end to this conflict.” He reaffirmed the UN’s stance that any resolution must align with international law and relevant UN resolutions.

The Istanbul summit, proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and accepted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has gained broad international backing, including from the U.S Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to host the historic meeting, which would mark the first direct negotiations between the two nations since early 2022.

This diplomatic push, supported by the UN and major global players, is seen as a critical opportunity to pave the way for a ceasefire and eventual peace in a war that has gripped Eastern Europe for over three years.
