Turkiye Labels U.S. Decision to Sell Arms to Greek Cyprus as a ‘Grave Mistake’

U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Wednesday allowing the Greek Cypriot administration to purchase military equipment from the United States.

Turkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the U.S. decision, calling it a “grave mistake.”

The Ministry aligned its stance with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), stating in a press release, “We view this decision, which will escalate military activity on the island, as a serious error.”

The statement emphasized the need for all relevant parties to act prudently and avoid provocative actions, especially during a critical period in the region.

Turkiye called on the U.S. administration to reconsider this decision, which it described as a continuation of policies initiated prior to the current presidency.

The Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Turkiye’s commitment to supporting the TRNC in strengthening its defense capabilities, stating, “As a motherland and guarantor state, Turkiye will continue to assist the TRNC’s defense efforts.”

This criticism follows a similar condemnation by Turkiye last September when the U.S. extended the lifting of an arms embargo on Greek Cyprus for an additional year.
