Türkiye Expects New Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks, Says FM Hakan Fidan

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said a new round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine is expected soon, as both sides recognize the importance of dialogue.

Fidan emphasized in an interview with news channel Türkiye’s consistent stance against the war and its active role in peace efforts. He recalled initiatives such as the 2022 Istanbul talks, the Black Sea Grain Initiative, and multiple prisoner exchanges.

Fidan confirmed that the June 2 meeting between the parties resulted in an agreement on a new prisoner exchange involving over 1,000 individuals. He added that both sides shared documents proposing ceasefire conditions and discussed the possibility of a future leaders’ summit.

He stated that the location of talks is not important, but continuity is. Türkiye, he added, remains ready to host further dialogue. Fidan also noted that President Erdoğan is trusted by both sides and well-positioned to facilitate future meetings.

On Syria, Fidan said a new regional coordination cell has been launched to combat Daesh (ISIS), involving Türkiye, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. He highlighted improving coordination between Ankara, Damascus, and Washington on this front.
