A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Marmaris in Türkiye’s Mugla province early Tuesday, causing widespread panic. While there was no major structural damage, fear and chaos led to injuries — and tragically, the death of a 14-year-old girl.
Afranur Günlü suffered a fatal panic attack during the quake in the Fethiye district. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved, Mugla Governor Idris Akbiyik confirmed.
According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake occurred more than 10 km off the Marmaris coast at a depth of nearly 68 km. While the tremor itself caused limited physical damage, many residents were injured as they tried to flee buildings or jumped from balconies in fear.
A total of 69 people were affected, with 55 receiving hospital care. Most of the injuries were minor, and eight individuals have already been discharged. Only two buildings in the area showed light damage, such as cracked walls.
This event highlights the emotional toll of earthquakes, even when physical destruction is limited.
