Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Hopes Putin-Trump Call Will “Sober Up” Western Politicians

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shared his thoughts on the recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S President Donald Trump, expressing his hope that the conversation would help “sober up” Western leaders, particularly in the EU.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin in Moscow, Lavrov noted that the call between the two leaders wasn’t just an ordinary diplomatic exchange it was a necessary reminder of how real politics works.

According to Lavrov, it’s about sitting down, talking things through, and finding common ground despite disagreements.

Lavrov voiced his surprise at how the West, especially the European Union, reacted to the call, calling it “extraordinary.”

He pointed out that both leaders showed that even with differences, respectful dialogue remains the core of diplomacy. “I hope this will serve as a reminder to those who’ve forgotten the essence of politics,” he said, addressing Western politicians.

He also took the opportunity to comment on the state of Russian relations with the West, emphasizing that under former U.S. President Joe Biden, ties had hit a low point.

However, with Trump’s return, Lavrov expressed cautious optimism about the potential for renewed talks.

On the topic of regional security, Lavrov highlighted Russia’s role in Tajikistan, particularly in countering terrorism and addressing the security concerns posed by Afghanistan.

He mentioned that Russia’s military base in Tajikistan played a crucial role in safeguarding not just Tajikistan, but the entire Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) border.

Lavrov’s comments come amid growing tensions in the region and global concerns about the stability of Central Asia. He remains hopeful that the Putin-Trump conversation will signal a shift towards more constructive and collaborative diplomacy.
