In a major step towards regional cooperation and reconstruction, Qatar has pledged to support Syria by restoring electricity supplies, settling outstanding debts with the World Bank, and funding public sector salaries for the next three months.
This announcement came after a high-level meeting in Doha between Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and a Syrian delegation led by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. The talks signaled growing diplomatic ties and mutual commitment to rebuilding Syria following the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024.
The joint statement emphasized collaborative efforts across multiple sectors, including energy, finance, trade, IT, higher education, and development. Saudi Arabia has also joined the initiative, partnering with Qatar to provide both financial and infrastructure support.
Qatar reiterated its steadfast support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the aspirations of its people for a peaceful, law-based state. The Syrian delegation praised Qatar’s consistent solidarity and expressed commitment to non-interference and mutual respect between states.
This marks a significant chapter in Syrian-Qatari relations, following the reopening of Qatar’s embassy in Damascus last December and the appointment of transitional President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in January.
