Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, has said that despite continued provocations from India, Pakistan has so far refrained from exercising its right to respond under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
In an interview with Turkish media, Ambassador Iftikhar highlighted that India’s aggressive actions especially the recent attacks on Pakistani territory pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
He described Kashmir as a nuclear flashpoint, pointing out that even international publications have identified the region as a key geopolitical fault line.
“India launched an attack on Pakistan on the night of May 6 and 7. Every measure we have taken since then has been in retaliation,” he said. “Yet, despite this, Pakistan has not exercised its Article 51 right under the UN Charter. We have chosen restraint.”
Ambassador Iftikhar emphasized Pakistan’s position as a responsible nuclear power, reiterating that the country is committed to peace but remains ready to defend itself if necessary. He added that Pakistan’s approach has been measured, despite India’s continued attempts to escalate tensions.
The statement comes as international concerns grow over rising hostility in South Asia, with calls mounting for de-escalation and dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
