Pakistan Calls for End to Israeli Occupation at the United Nations

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, has called for the end of Israel’s occupation of Syrian, Lebanese, and Palestinian territories, emphasizing the importance of respecting the sovereignty of Syria and Lebanon.

In a detailed briefing on the situation in the Middle East, Akram condemned Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights, stressing the need for the restoration of Syria’s territorial integrity and the establishment of an inclusive government framework.

At the beginning of Pakistan’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Akram reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the fair resolution of global conflicts and upholding the UN Charter.

He stated that the Security Council should demand the termination of Israel’s illegal occupation, welcoming Syria’s positive statements regarding a transitional administration but urging for practical steps.

Akram also highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria, with over 70% of the population in need of aid and millions displaced, calling for full financial support for the UN’s humanitarian initiatives and international cooperation to ensure the safe return of Syrian refugees.

Further, Akram welcomed the agreement between Lebanon and Israel, urging Israel to honor the 60-day deadline for withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

He expressed hope that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza would pave the way for a comprehensive solution, including the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

Emphasizing the critical role of the UN and Security Council in establishing peace in the Middle East, Akram called for efforts to assist in Syria’s reconstruction, address the threats of terrorism, and form an inclusive government structure to bring stability to the region.
