Istanbul Faces Disruptions as Heavy Snowfall, Fog, and Ice Cause Chaos

Istanbul residents are grappling with severe weather conditions as heavy snowfall, fog, and icy roads disrupt daily life across the city. Schools have been closed, flights canceled, and public transportation is struggling.

The snowstorm, which began on February 10, 2025, intensified over the past 48 hours, causing widespread traffic jams and making roads hazardous.

Istanbul Governor’s Office announced that schools in various districts, including Basaksehir, Esenyurt, and Beylikduzu, would remain closed on February 12 due to the snowstorm.

Authorities issued a yellow code weather warning, predicting further snow and strong winds, while the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Center warned of ice buildup on roads and sidewalks.

Public transport has been heavily affected, with buses stuck in snow and ferries suspended due to low visibility caused by thick fog.

Additionally, Sabiha Gokcen Airport has canceled several flights, and the Bosphorus Strait was temporarily closed to ship traffic.

Experts advise residents to avoid personal vehicles, opt for public transport, and take precautions while traveling.

Authorities have also called for caution on icy sidewalks and roads as the snow is expected to continue until February 13, 2025.
