In a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 athletics season, Dutch middle-distance runner Sifan Hassan and Botswana sprinter Letsile Tebogo have been named the 2024 Women’s and Men’s World Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Hassan, who set a new Olympic record in the Paris 2024 women’s marathon with a time of 2:22:55, expressed her gratitude to fans and voters. “I never thought I was going to win this one. This year was crazy. It’s not only me – all the athletes have been amazing. I’m really grateful. What more can I say?”
Tebogo made history by claiming Botswana’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the 200m event. He said, “It feels amazing to know that the fans are always there for us athletes. It was a great year.”
Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis was awarded the Male Field Athlete of the Year after breaking his own pole vault world record with a clearance of 6.26 meters. Other winners included Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (US) for Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR) for Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
