A devastating airstrike in Gaza City’s Al-Tabi’in School has claimed the life of Palestinian journalist Alaa Barhoum, bringing the total number of journalists killed in Gaza to 190 since last year.
Barhoum, an editor for multiple media outlets, was among 11 Palestinians, mostly women and children, killed in the airstrike.
The Gaza government media office has strongly condemned the targeting of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces, calling on the international community to hold the Israeli government accountable. The office described the actions as “genocide” in Gaza.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has deemed the killings of journalists in Gaza “unacceptable” and called for the protection of the press. Guterres emphasized that journalists in Gaza have been killed at a level unseen in any conflict, and the ongoing ban on international journalists visiting Gaza “suffocates the truth even more”.
The conflict in Gaza has taken a devastating toll on journalists, with at least 137 journalists and media workers confirmed killed, including 129 Palestinians, two Israelis, and six Lebanese.
