Former Polish President Lech Walesa has expressed “horror and distaste” over US President Donald Trump’s treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a joint letter, signed by Walesa and 30 former Polish political prisoners, they criticized Trump’s demand for Zelensky to show gratitude, describing it as “insulting” given the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv.
The letter stated that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during the encounter reminded the signatories of the harsh interrogations they endured during Poland’s communist era.
“The prosecutors and judges, working on behalf of the omnipotent Communist party police, also told us that they held all the cards, and we held none,” the letter read.
The former political prisoners expressed their shock that Trump treated Zelensky in the same manner, recalling the brutal tactics of communist-era Poland.
Lech Walesa, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1983, led the Solidarity movement that played a pivotal role in the fall of communism in Poland.
