European Parliament President Calls Gaza Situation “Catastrophic,” Urges Immediate Aid and Ceasefire

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” urging urgent humanitarian access and a permanent ceasefire. Speaking alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Metsola emphasized the need to ensure aid reaches those most in need amid ongoing suffering.

Metsola highlighted the EU’s role as the largest provider of humanitarian aid and questioned the delivery and distribution of this assistance on the ground. She reiterated the Parliament’s call for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and progress toward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Prime Minister Frederiksen also stressed the urgent need for aid access, a ceasefire, and the safe release of hostages, urging Israel to protect civilians in Gaza.

Since October 2023, Israel’s offensive in Gaza has resulted in nearly 54,500 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, with aid agencies warning of an impending famine for over 2 million residents.
