During a meeting in Washington, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty firmly rejected the idea of displacing Palestinians from Gaza, following suggestions made by US President Donald Trump.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of focusing on rebuilding Gaza, emphasizing that Palestinians should remain in their homeland, with support from both regional and international communities.
Abdelatty also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to working with the US to push for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, ensuring that the Palestinian people’s rights, including the establishment of an independent state, are respected.
The meeting marked the first round of discussions between Abdelatty and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after Trump’s inauguration.
Trump had previously proposed that neighboring countries, such as Egypt and Jordan, accept displaced Palestinians, a suggestion that has been rejected by both Arab nations and Palestinian leaders.
In addition to the Gaza situation, the two diplomats discussed other regional issues, including Syria, Sudan, and Egypt’s water security concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
They also looked ahead to the Future of Egypt Economic Forum, aimed at boosting trade and investment between Egypt and the US.
