A devastating jet crash in South Korea on December 29 has dealt another blow to Boeing’s already troubled year.
The crash, which killed all but two of the 181 people on board, has raised concerns about the company’s safety record and reputation.
Although the cause of the crash is still under investigation, aviation experts have been quick to distinguish it from Boeing’s earlier safety problems, particularly those related to the 737 Max jetliner.
The Boeing 737-800 that crash-landed in Korea is considered a safe and proven airplane, with a different design and safety features compared to the 737 Max.
Boeing’s reputation has taken a hit in recent years, particularly after the 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, which resulted in the loss of 346 lives.
The company has since lost over $23 billion and fallen behind its rival Airbus in selling and delivering new planes.
In an effort to revamp its safety culture, Boeing has undergone significant changes, including the departure of CEO David Calhoun in August.
The company has also conducted safety meetings with over 70,000 employees since January.
The jet crash in South Korea marks a somber end to a challenging year for Boeing.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the company will be under intense scrutiny to demonstrate its commitment to safety and regain the trust of its customers and the public.
