Bangladesh Interim Government Imposes Ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League

The Bangladesh Interim Government has imposed a ban on the political activities of the Awami League, the party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This decision comes under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act, and the ban will remain in place until a special tribunal delivers a verdict on the ongoing cases against the party and its leaders.

These cases stem from the violent protests that took place in July and August of the previous year, which led to the deaths of hundreds of people. As a result, Hasina was forced to step down after a 15-year tenure as prime minister.

Hasina, who faces multiple murder charges, has been living in exile in India since August 2024. The Awami League has rejected the ban, calling it undemocratic and controversial.

On the other hand, National Citizen Party and other student organizations have endorsed the decision, stating it was necessary to protect national security and address the issues faced by victims of the government’s actions.

The United Nations previously confirmed that around 1,400 people died during the protest movements.

This ban has sparked renewed protests in Dhaka, demanding the end of Hasina’s party, and the International Crimes Tribunal has expanded its scope to address violence-related charges against other political parties as well.

This move marks a new twist in Bangladesh’s political landscape, raising concerns about democracy, rule of law, and political stability in the country.
