Azerbaijan’s Independence Day Celebrated in Pakistan, Emphasizing Longstanding Friendship with Pakistan

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Pakistan celebrated the 107th anniversary of the country’s national independence with an official reception highlighting Azerbaijan’s historic struggle, its commitment to sovereignty, and strong bilateral relations with Pakistan.

Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Ambassador Khazar Farhadov welcomed the chief guest, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, along with dignitaries, diplomats, journalists, and other guests. He highlighted the significance of May 28, 1918, when the Republic of Azerbaijan was established as the first secular democracy in the Muslim East.

He said the day is not just about celebrating freedom but also reflects the resilience, sacrifices, and progress-driven spirit of the Azerbaijani people.

The ambassador spoke about the historical achievements of the short-lived republic, which, in less than two years, laid the foundation of democratic institutions, established borders, and secured international recognition. He noted that although the republic lasted briefly, it played a key role in shaping Azerbaijan’s national identity and democratic legacy.

Paying tribute to National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev, he said Azerbaijan successfully preserved its independence after its restoration in 1991 and continues to thrive under strong leadership.

Speaking on close ties with Pakistan, the ambassador recalled that Pakistan was among the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991, with formal diplomatic relations established in 1992. He especially thanked Pakistan for its unwavering support during Azerbaijan’s border conflict with Armenia.

He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s engagement in environmental diplomacy, referencing a recent major international climate conference hosted by Azerbaijan. He noted with appreciation that Pakistan participated with a high-level delegation led by the Prime Minister, reflecting strong cooperation and a joint commitment to sustainable development.

The Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Irfan Nazir Oglu, also attended the event and emphasized the importance of brotherly ties among Türkiye, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan in fostering regional peace.

The ceremony concluded on a note of optimism, celebrating Azerbaijan’s journey toward independence and the enduring friendship with Pakistan.
