Baku — Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has expressed surprise and regret over the recent stance of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, stating that it was astonishing to see Assad side with Armenia instead of Azerbaijan.
Aliyev said that Azerbaijan had always shown sympathy and extended cooperation to the Syrian people in their difficult times, yet the Syrian president’s support for Armenia was disappointing. He added that Azerbaijan will continue to pursue its foreign policy in line with national interests and will not accept any unjust positions.
According to political analysts, Assad’s stance has added a new dimension to diplomatic tensions in the Caucasus region.
