Amnesty International Opposes French Bill to Ban Religious Symbols in Sports

Amnesty International has urged French lawmakers to reject a proposed bill that would ban headscarves and other religious symbols from being worn in sports competitions.

The bill, set to be debated in the French Senate this week, aims to prohibit religious affiliations in all sports disciplines.

Amnesty warned that although France’s secularism principle theoretically protects religious freedom, it has often been used to restrict Muslim women’s access to public spaces, including sports.
