Tashkent Hosts Landmark 150th IPU Assembly, Elevating Uzbekistan’s Global Role

The 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held for the first time in Tashkent, marks a historic milestone not only for Uzbekistan and Central Asia but also for the global parliamentary community, said UzA Director-General Abdisait Kuchimov.

The four-day event, which began on Saturday, brings together around 2,000 delegates from 181 countries and over 25 international organizations.

Key issues on the agenda include human rights, climate change, gender equality, rule of law, poverty reduction, technological innovation, and youth support.

Kuchimov emphasized the importance of the assembly in fostering global inter-parliamentary cooperation, promoting peace, and advancing democratic values.

He noted that the event reflects Uzbekistan’s growing diplomatic role and its commitment to legal and socio-economic reforms under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s leadership.

The IPU, founded in 1889, is one of the world’s most influential parliamentary bodies. Documents adopted during the assembly are expected to shape parliamentary strategies globally, serving as a “roadmap” for 21st-century legislative action.

Tashkent’s hosting of this major event adds to a series of high-level international gatherings in Uzbekistan this year, including the EU-Central Asia Summit and the upcoming Gulf Cooperation Council-Central Asia Summit.
