In a significant turn of events, Ekrem İmamoğlu the Mayor of Istanbul, has been arrested by Turkish authorities.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that over 100 individuals, including İmamoğlu, are under investigation for various criminal activities.
According to the prosecutor’s statement, İmamoğlu has been labeled as the “suspected leader of a criminal organization” in connection with a wide-ranging investigation known as the “Urban Reconciliation” operation.
Several other key figures have also been named, including Murat Ongon, Chairman of BB Medya A.Ş and prominent suspects Tanjay Yılmaz, Fateh Kailesh and Eritan Yıldız, who are referred to as the “executive suspects” of the alleged organization.
The investigation involves several figures from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) with high-profile individuals such as Mahir Polat, IMM’s Deputy Secretary-General, Resul Ekrem Şahin, the Mayor of Keşişli, Mehmet Ali Berşkan, President of the Reform Institute, and the Deputy Mayor of Dezlibrude also under scrutiny.
This arrest has caused a stir in Turkish politics, particularly among İmamoğlu’s supporters, who view it as an attempt to undermine the opposition.
