Greenland has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting the US would acquire the island, with Prime Minister Mute B. Egede emphasizing that Greenlanders are in control of their own future.
The statement came after Trump declared that the US would secure Greenland “one way or another,” citing its strategic importance.
In a post on Facebook, Prime Minister Egede expressed his strong opposition to Trump’s remarks, asserting that Greenlanders’ sovereignty and identity are non-negotiable.
“We are Kalaallit (Greenlanders). The Americans and their leader must understand that. We are not for sale and cannot just be taken. Our future is decided by us here in Greenland,” Egede stated.
He also pointed out that Denmark, which handles Greenland’s foreign and security policies, shares this stance, reaffirming that neither Greenland nor Denmark supports any claim over the island by the United States.
Trump had emphasized Greenland’s significance during his address to Congress, saying, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security.”
He further added, “We’re working with everybody involved to try and get it, but we need it really for international world security, and I think we’re going to get it one way or the other; we’re going to get it.”
In his statement, Trump also expressed support for the Greenland people’s right to self-determination stating, “We strongly support your right to determine your future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.”
Greenland, the world’s largest island, has been an autonomous territory of Denmark since 1979 and has increasingly attracted attention from the US due to its vast natural resources and strategic location in the Arctic.
Despite this, Greenlanders have made it clear that they wish to remain independent and sovereign in determining their future.
