China Challenges US Tariffs at WTO and Retaliates with New Tariffs on US Goods

In response to the United States’ imposition of an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods, China has officially initiated legal proceedings with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticized the US’s unilateral action, stating that it violates WTO rules and undermines the foundation of China-US economic and trade cooperation.

China expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to Washington’s decision and reiterated its commitment to defending its legitimate rights within the framework of international trade agreements.

The Ministry also emphasized the importance of maintaining the multilateral trading system and the international economic order.

As a countermeasure, China announced that it would impose new tariffs on US agricultural products, effective March 10.

A 15% tariff will apply to imports such as chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, while a 10% tariff will affect products like sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy items.

The escalation follows the recent announcement by US President Donald Trump of a new 10% tariff on China, adding to the previously imposed tariffs.

This ongoing trade dispute further strains the already tense economic relations between the two global powers.
