A New Turn in Turkiye-Syria Relations, Hakan Fidan’s Key Statement in Saudi Arabia

Turkiye’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, attended the ‘Syria Meeting’ held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where European countries, the Arab League, and Syria’s new Foreign Minister, Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, were also present.

During the meeting, Fidan emphasized the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty, while highlighting the need for international cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Fidan offered cooperation with Syria’s new government in counterterrorism efforts, particularly against PKK/YPG in eastern Syria.

He stressed that Syria’s natural resources, especially oil reserves, should be used for the public good and that exploitation by terrorist groups must stop.

He further stated that if the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the YPG, are truly sincere about becoming part of Syria’s central system, they must dissolve immediately.

During the meeting, Fidan also announced that Turkiye is ready to assist Syria in its reconstruction and constitution-making process to bring stability to the war-torn country.
