Bills on Pension Increase, Cybersecurity, and Judicial Training Under Debate in Turkiye’s Parliament

The General Assembly of Turkiye will resume its session tomorrow, where several significant legislative matters will be discussed.

During the session, drafts on pension increases, cybersecurity, and the establishment of the Turkish Justice Academy will be deliberated.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will review a bill proposing the creation of a specialized educational institution within the judiciary for training purposes.

According to the bill, judges and prosecutors with at least eight years of experience will be eligible for assignment to the academy.

The National Defense Committee will review a new cybersecurity bill that suggests the establishment of a cybersecurity board, including the president, ministers, the intelligence chief, and other senior officials.

The bill recommends prioritizing local products and sentencing individuals convicted of cyberattacks to up to 12 years in prison.

The Planning and Budget Committee will consider amendments to pension laws to increase pensions.

The proposal suggests raising the minimum pension from TL 12,500 to TL 14,469 (approximately $408), while employers will receive a TL 1,000 monthly subsidy for minimum wage payments.

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Bilgin has already announced a 15.75% increase, which requires approval from legislators.

For 2024, Turkiye’s minimum monthly wage has been set at TL 22,104 ($627) after a 30% increase.

Although this increase is lower than labor union expectations, experts say it reflects the government’s commitment to achieving its inflation reduction targets.

A parliamentary subcommittee will meet this week with representatives from medical unions and private hospitals concerning the newborn deaths scandal.

This scandal came to light last year when a group was accused of making profits by causing unnecessary treatments in 19 private hospitals, endangering the lives of newborns.

Representatives from Netflix will brief a parliamentary committee on digital platforms.

Netflix’s previously aired dramas have faced criticism in Turkiye for anti-government propaganda and inappropriate content.

On Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will address the ruling party’s meeting in Parliament.

This speech will be of particular significance in the context of important legislation and regional developments.

Experts say that the economic measures under discussion in Parliament, including pension and wage increases, are part of the government’s strategy to control inflation.

According to the central bank, the inflation rate for 2024 is expected to be around 44.4%, with an anticipated drop to 21% by the end of 2025.

This week will prove to be a busy and important one for legislation in Turkiye.
