South Korean lawmakers have voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid. The opposition is hailing it as a “victory of the people”!
The impeachment vote, which took place on Saturday, December 14, saw 204 lawmakers out of 300 voting in favor of impeachment, exceeding the required two-thirds threshold.
This development comes after a week of intense political drama in South Korea, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets in rival rallies for and against Yoon.
With the impeachment, Yoon has been suspended from office, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has taken over as the interim leader.
The Constitutional Court will now deliberate on the vote, with a decision expected within 180 days. If the court backs the impeachment, Yoon will become the second president in South Korean history to be successfully impeached.
